Dope is #dope as I would say it. Saying extra is gonna
ruin the dopeness… Even Gabriel Union can testify to it’s dopeness. Lol.
And according to Forbes:
“Dope” is a smart, fun, film that exploits and explodes
conventions of coming-of-age movies, in-the-hood comedies and dramas, and
throws in a satisfying “Risky Business” plot twist ending.
Written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, “Dope” tells the story of a
bunch of African-American high school seniors – A students with good test
scores, intent on Ivy League colleges, fans of 90s Hip-hop who have a pop punk
band. Living in the Inglewood neighborhood of Los Angeles, their route home
takes them by the territory of a prominent drug dealer Dom, played with finesse
and intelligence by ASAP Rocky. The title is a triple-play of words, referring
to drugs, teenage idiots, and 90s slang for something that’s ‘cool,” all of
which this film features.
Shameik Moore, in a career-making debut plays Malcolm, who
accepts an invitation to Dom’s birthday party for the chance to hang out with a
Nakia, (Zoe Kravitz) a girl he has a crush on. What ensues, where it leads
Malcolm, and how he extricates himself from the predicament(s) he finds himself
in, is what makes this movie entertaining.
The movie is a mish-mash of styles and genres, shifting
between drama, comedy, satire, with musical performances thrown into the mix –
the plot doesn’t always proceed logically or hew to common sense, and what
ethics are displayed in the story are, at best, situational. However, like
‘Risky Business’, we root for the characters to succeed and are gratified when
they do.
This is the rare teen movie that both parents and kids will enjoy. That is saying a lot!
